No your eyes are not playing tricks on you, that is a whole lot of papertape. I find it easier to work with then papermache'.
Since :iconchibibar: has a rather large head (love you hunny) I can't just simply use a basic mask and cut, noooo I have to nearly completely rebuild the base from the bottom up. There is a plastic base in there that holds the shape of the forehead and nose but the rest are layers upon layers of papertape to make it solid. Soon I will be sealing it so I can start working with the paper clay and smooth out the details.
As you can guess I was not kidding when I said I work with nearly anything to create art.

Amazing.

My brother created a little box out of paper tape.

That must have been a lot of hard work, but fun.
It's looking really good and I can't wait to see the finished costumes.
...You'll be puting them up, right?

thanks,
Paper tape is great. It's lightweight, easy to work with, and cheap. I think at most I used was about a quarter of a role of tape to built what I did on that mask... and no mess what so ever.

That's better than making a plaster cast of your husband's face and sticking straws up his nose so he can breath while the plaster dries.

FYI: The only accurate image of George Washington's face is a plaster mold of his head.

Not really, because there is no mess when using the tape, I was sitting on my computer and playing sims 2 while working on this. I think what gave me the most issues was trying to get the mask long enough and wide enough for the hubby's huge head. Since my head is allot smaller then his I had to have him repeatively try on the mask so I could see how much more I had to add on. (about 2 inches on forehead, an inch on each side of the head, and about 2 inches on the jaw.) Needless to say I had to redo the mouth a good 6 times to fit him right.

I would have prolly done the liquid cast then plaster bandages instead of the old plaster mold making but that is way too much work to do for a simple cosplay piece. If I was planning on doing it for money, then I would have done it the other way.

True. But I bet some truly die hard fans would go with the plater mold.

True, but unlike those people... I don't have the time or the money to put that much work into it. The cost for the complete construction of this mask is 15$ (2$ for the base mask, 3$ for the role of tape, 2.50$ for the partical board, 3$ for the paperclay, 1$ for the wood glue, and 3.50$ for the varnish. The paint, sandpaper, and fabric for the mask ties I already have from left over pieces of costumes.) vs 50-80$ and putting the husband through hell while I try to get a cast of his head (has had it done to her and it is not fun.)
